Themes and templates

One of the things I plan to ship with MeTal is a set of basic themes to allow people to get started right out of the box:

I've got personal use cases for all four, although the last on the list is going to be more useful to others than to myself. (My one foray into webcomics, which lasted about a year, was more notable for me trying to keep it up for that length of time than because it was actually funny or artistically noteworthy.)

The basic templates are meant to be just that: basic. One thing I haven't yet figured out is how they are to be programmatically extended, or how they will in turn programatically extend the system itself -- e.g., if you have a template where you want to have a homepage slotting panel, how is that implemented? Those parts are still to be worked out, and right now my plan is to save those things for later on. It's possible to deliver a basic product without them, but in the long run I know they're essential.
